Calgary’s Smalltown DJs are without a doubt one of the freshest DJ duos out right now, and they’ve been especially prolific the last few months, moving from the periphery of my musical consciousness where they had been since their impressive North American Wildlife mix with Certified Bananas a couple of years back into pretty heavy rotation.
First, and by far the most fun of their recent output, the Red Bull University mix is the most intricate thing they’ve done so far, very cut-and-paste, sprinkled with samples from classic college movies, and mostly composed of some incredible blends and edits. This is the kind of mix that makes slogging through all the mediocrity out there worth it. No tracklist is available, but highlights include Pitbull over an edit of the Rolling Stones’ “Satisfaction”, an incredible club remix of Tommy James & The Shondells’ “I Think We’re Alone Now”, and Mims’ “This Is Why I’m Hot” over Toto’s “Africa.”
If you only download one of these sets, make it this one

Last September brought an installment of Discobelle’s long-running Mixin’ It Up series, with a track selection that’s loaded up with some great house music, new and old, as well as a few original blends, and among other highlights, a Prince mash-up by SF’s Rock It Scientists that is rather amazing.
Download it here, tracklist and commentary here.

November saw Pete and Mike release the Eurodance Tour mix in conjunction with a few gigs across the Atlantic, this one is pretty focused on the heavy, rave-y stuff that’s been so dominant lately that I feel can get a little obnoxious if it’s not done right. Thankfully it’s done very well here, 36 minutes of bangers, click the tracklist to download.
